So, you've made the decision to try your hand at dog house building, but you're a bit unsure about the right way to go from here, right? Don't worry, it's a lot easier to build a great dog house than what you think! This article is a general guide to building a dog house.
Choose The Right Size
House
First things first, you need to decide on the size and design of your homemade dog house. You may think you already know how big it needs to be, but many people don't realise all the great options available.
There are 3 main designs:
- A medium dog house for small and mid-sized dogs, such as Dachshunds and Bull Terriers.
- A large, premium dog house for big dogs like German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers.
- A duplex dog house, so 2 or more of the little guys can sleep snuggled up together!
Even if you currently only have one small dog, consider building a kennel that is bigger than you require. You never know when you might get another dog!
Dog House Design Tips
If you really love your dog, there are a few small things you should do to ensure s/he is comfortable and happy inside her/his new home.
Here are a few tips:
- Make sure the floor is raised a few inches from the ground so ensure good air circulations. Dogs are particularly sensitive to heat.
- The floor should also be slanted slightly towards to door so that any water that might get in with quickly run out.
- Consider building an overhanging roof so that your dog is protected from strong winds and heavy rains.
- Build the roof with some hinges on the edges to make it easier to clean! Genius!
